Ethiopia Guji Dry Process Hambela
Ethiopia Guji Dry Process Hambela
THE FARM: This coffee is sourced from a third generation family owned business with a rich history that began after World War II, when the Ethiopian Emperor awarded Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot and family matriarch, with land in the Guji and Sidama zones that has since become the Hambela Coffee Estate. The estate is managed by Aman Adinew, who returned to Ethiopia after many years working abroad at the executive level for multiple fortune 500 companies, because he wanted to make a difference for his family and community. Through Aman’s leadership, the farm has strengthened relationships with the local community with employment opportunities, including a workforce that is over seventy percent women, educational opportunities, including sponsorship for a state-of-the-art elementary school with more than four hundred students, and healthcare for employees. The farm partners with Grounds for Health in Ethiopia to implement a successful cervical cancer screening program for women within the coffee growing communities, and they have the first and only private state-of-the-art SCAA certified coffee quality control lab on the African continent used to train both domestic and international coffee professionals.
This particular lot was dry-processed, meaning that the whole coffee cherry is laid to dry with the bean still inside. This type of processing is the oldest, and takes upwards of 3 weeks to full dry the coffee beans inside the fleshy fruit. This type of process has a big impact on cup flavor and results in fruity profiles, big body, and often a more rounded acidity. Naturals can be quite rustic and result in a relatively refined flavor profile that is vibrant and floral.
OUR ROAST is complex, with bright fruit flavors, that have a remarkable intensity to them. The flavor profile starts out with notes of blackberry that have a wine-like quality, pomegranate syrup, and a balsamic hint. There's also a honey-sweet flavor that comes up as the coffee cools, that along with the wine note, gives off a subtle impression of honey mead. It's a really enjoyable cup, and certainly unique!
