Kenya Nyeri Dry Process Kamoini
Kenya Nyeri Dry Process Kamoini
THE FARM: Wet processing is the standard in Kenya, and considering they produce some of the cleanest wet process coffees in the world, we rarely stray from them! But this small lot from Kamoini is delicious, so we couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy this lot. Kamoini mill is part of the Othaya Farmer's Cooperative Society ("FCS"), an FCS that includes an impressive amount of wet mills, 18 in all, dating back to the late 1950s. Kamoini Factory sits at 1825 meters above sea level, right along the Ichamama River, which is fed from the Karima forest above. "Factories" are essentially small washing stations aligned with a particular "society" in Kenya, what we would call a "cooperative". Being one of the older Kenya FCS, we are well aware of the quality coming out and have had the good fortune to buy from this lot.
OUR ROAST: We rarely have the chance to taste dry process coffee from Kenya, and this small lot from Kamoini is delicious! On the flavor spectrum of dry process coffees, this is on the 'Ethiopia' end, with expressive fruits, and aromatic hints. That should come as no surprise seeing this is Kenyan coffee! The fragrance of the dry grounds released red berry notes, with some juicy fruit accents. The wet aroma brought out cooked berry notes, like raspberry and blueberry pie filling, cooked down with sugar. It's an intense smelling coffee in terms of fruits, but the sugary smells can't be understated. All this translated into a fruit-forward brew, very much in the berry section of the flavor wheel, with slices of bright citrus too.
