Sumatra Raja Batak Peaberry
Sumatra Raja Batak Peaberry
THE FARM: Raja Batak comes from the growing region of Lintong in Northern Sumatra near the shores of Lake Toba, the largest volcanic crater lake in the world, and the result of the largest volcanic event on earth in the last 25 million years!
This coffee is a somewhat unique venture between a Costa Rican farmer and an Indonesian coffee exporter. Together, they see to it that the coffee is carefully selected and separated by quality, then double hand-picked during the milling process. The result is a visibly superior overall sort.
This coffee is also a peaberry selection, which happens as a mutation where one of the two seeds inside the coffee cherry dies off, leaving behind a single, round-shaped bean. They are the exception, for sure, with most shrubs producing much less than 10%. Some people think that peaberries tend to be sweeter since a single seed receives all of the nutrients.
OUR ROAST is pure rustic sweetness, mixing syrupy fruit smells with earth-toned bitter-sweetness. The aroma is quite herbal, and a complex mix of bittersweet cocoa and green herbals.
This coffee is part of the 'Farm Gate' program from our friends at The Coffee Shrub, which means they have negotiated directly with the farmer, and guarantee prices that are at least 50%, and often more than 100%, over fair trade.
