Sumatra Organic Ketiara Women's Coop
Sumatra Organic Ketiara Women's Coop
THE FARM: This coffee comes from family-owned farms organized around the Ratu Ketiara Gayo coop, located in the Takengon highlands of the Aceh province on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. This region of Indonesia is also referred to as the Gayo land because the coffee farmers are from the Gayonese ethnic group. The coop was established in 2017 by a group of young women focused on creating gender equity and investing in young coffee producers. The female leadership is mentored by Rahmah, who works tirelessly with a number of cooperatives in the region to overcome the inequity of a male dominated coffee industry in Indonesia. We’re excited to be able to support the coop and promote more diversity and equality in coffee farming.
OUR ROAST: Right from the start, the smells found in this lot set a very high standard for wet-hulled coffee. The grounds have a scent of brown rice syrup with some wood spice hints. The brew is a real treat, it has the herbal and earthy notes you might expect from a wet-hulled coffee, but along with that come top notes that are uncharacteristic for this type of process, such as marshmallow.
